Timber framed buildings, elaborate Georgian facades and medieval churches still stand tall today as evidence of the wealth created from Sudbury's various industries over the centuries...
Sudbury’s historic streets are steeped in our industrial heritage. Architectural clues and monuments from wool, cloth, silk, brick, brewing still stand proudly throughout the town; from characterful Weavers’ Cottages, to mighty Silk Mills and water mills, Sudbury’s Weavers’ Piece garden packed with dye plants to Sudbury’s three magnificent medieval churches and splendid timber framed buildings, the architectural legacy of the wealth of Sudbury’s various industries over the years. After the decline of the wool trade, Sudbury’s spinners and weavers turned their skills to the production of lighter fabrics and the town has become 'The UK Capital of Silk' - a status Sudbury retains to this day.
Sudbury is still home to much sought after products and materials, Mauldon's have been brewing fine beers in Sudbury for over 200 years, Ballingdon Bricks & Tiles are still in high demand, not to mention our cultural industries and our Charter Market that is over 1000 years old! Our retail and hospitality industries are a source of pride and with a high street that is over 70% independent you'll find a town centre stacked with personality.
